Astro Boy, originally known as Tetsuwan Atomu (meaning Mighty Atom), is a fictional character from Japanese anime and manga. He first appeared in Osamu Tezuka's manga series of the same name, but gained wider recognition through the various animated adaptations.

Astro Boy is an android created by Dr. Tenma, the head of the Ministry of Science. Dr. Tenma built Astro Boy in the likeness of his deceased son, Tobio. However, Dr. Tenma eventually rejected Astro Boy when he realized that the robot could not truly replace his son.

Abandoned, Astro Boy is later sold to a circus, where he is discovered by Professor Ochanomizu. Ochanomizu recognizes Astro Boy's potential and takes him in, becoming his guardian. He also equips Astro Boy with advanced capabilities, including rocket-powered flight, superhuman strength, and various weapons systems.

Astro Boy dedicates himself to fighting crime and protecting humanity from both robotic and human threats. He grapples with issues of identity, purpose, and the relationship between humans and robots, making him a complex and enduring character.
